A Hospice for Sakalwe Dullstroom Fundraising nr. 013-513NPO Contact: Sue Solesbury at 013 254 0343 Background FAMSA Northern Mpumalanga was established in 2003 to meet the multiple needs of our rural communities, 80-90% of whom were unemployed and suffered from poverty and malnutrition, rendering them especially vulnerable to AIDS.47,4% of the local population are now HIV+ and our local number of orphans are 125. Whilst Social Auxiliary Workers monitor and support these children and their foster parents, the situation of terminal AIDS patients dying alone and uncared for has continued. It is to meet this need for palliative care that a 16-bed mobile prefabricated Hospice for Sakalwe is to arrive the second week of March 2008! Emakhazeni Municipality has allocated 12.5 hectares of land in front of Siyifunile High School to FAMSA Northern Mpumalanga on a 20-year lease, and combined with the hospice, which has a large training centre, this could be further developed to provide facilities for orphans and vulnerable children, and projects to increase self-help in the community.
